Many Nigerians often wonder why so little seems to work effectively in our country despite our enormous human and natural resources.
One major reason is the quality of leadership and governance. Too many individuals who find themselves in positions of authority view public office as an opportunity for personal enrichment rather than a platform for service and development.
As a result, resources meant for improving infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, and the general welfare of the people are frequently mismanaged or diverted.
Competence is also a critical issue. Leadership positions should be occupied by individuals with the necessary education, experience, integrity, and vision to tackle the complex challenges facing our nation.
Unfortunately, merit is often sacrificed for political patronage, loyalty, or other considerations that have little to do with effective governance.
The consequence is predictable: poor planning, weak institutions, inadequate service delivery, widespread poverty, and growing public frustration.
Development is stalled because those entrusted with public resources are sometimes more focused on personal gain than on the collective progress of the communities they serve.
However, it is important to recognize that the President cannot and should not be blamed for every problem in the country.
Nigeria operates a federal system of government in which governors and local government chairpersons have significant constitutional responsibilities and receive substantial public resources to address the needs of their people. Citizens must therefore hold their state and local leaders accountable for the condition of roads, schools, healthcare facilities, sanitation, local security initiatives, and other services that fall within their jurisdictions.
Too often, public attention is focused solely on the Presidency while failures at the state and local government levels go unchecked. Good governance requires accountability at all levels. Every elected official, from the President to the governor, local government chairperson, legislator, and councillor, must be judged by their performance and commitment to public service.
Nigeria's challenges are not insurmountable. What we need is a new culture of leadership—one built on competence, accountability, transparency, integrity,n and genuine commitment to public service. Only then can we begin to unlock the nation's vast potential and deliver the prosperity that Nigerians deserve.
The responsibility for building a better Nigeria belongs to all of us, but those entrusted with public office must lead by example and place the interests of the people above personal gain.
